Painted Gardens
“There’s a difference between emptiness and space.”
-Yoshi Hollis, Ikebana master teacher
In 1995 I signed up for a Japanese flower arranging class, having no idea how life changing a decision that would turn out to be. Everything about Ikebana is different than traditional flower arranging. You come at things sideways, happen upon the beauty. Rather than centering in on a perfect bloom, fallen leaves and buds about to open, a sense of history and transience are what’s important.
Translating that sense of history and transience, conveying an appreciation of the beauty in imperfection into paintings is deeply grounding and joyful. When at work on this series, my breathing slows and my mouth waters.
Coming Home, 36 x 36 in., mixed media on panel
Each and every one of these paintings was a joy to get lost in. Enjoy, and feel free to reach out for us to plan your own painted garden commission. Nothing makes me happier than to bring the beauty of the natural world into people’s homes to soak in every day.
